Celiac Disease

Celiac disease is an autoimmune digestive disorder or Genetics - where body have an allergy to foods containing gluten. But still the exact cause of celiac disease is not known.

Gluten is a kind of protein found in grains People with celiac disease react only to the gluten present in wheat, barley and rye.

Foods containing gluten are oats, semolina, pastas, bread, pastries, noodles, pizzas, biscuits

Celiac disease is a condition where villous lining of the small intestine distorts and disappears.   The intestinal lining is velvety to increase the surface area of ​​the intestines, they are called villi, this enlarged surface helps to absorb nutrients.

When people with celiac disease eat foods or use products that contain gluten their immune system reacts towards the intake of gluten, that leads to damage of villi.  Absence of villi leads to lack of nutrition. Because body is not able to absorb the nutrients from the food.


In terms of Ayurveda, celiac disease indicates an imbalance of certain body energies that result in the immunity and digestive system turning extremely weak .

According to Ayurvedic point of view “coeliac disease” is known as “Grahani” that causes imbalance in the agni ( digestive fire).  Mainly pitta, kapha, & vata dosha is involved in this disease. 

Ayurveda describes Celiac disease as the result of the wrong decisions by the immune cells. The immune cells are observed to be behaving abnormally to gluten.
