Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic disease of unknown cause affecting large amount of population .
Rheumatoid Arthritis is a progressive autoimmune disease that causes inflammation and pain in the joints, the tissue around the joints and other organs, it is disorder where the body’s defense systems turns against it. Normally immune system helps protect body from infection and disease. In rheumatoid arthritis health problem - immune system attacks healthy tissue in joints. Generally manifests as pain in the joints along with swelling and difficulty in movements, but in some condition can damage a wide variety of body systems including heart, lungs, nerves, eyes and skin, kidney, nerve tissue, bone marrow and blood vessels.
Unlike the wear-and-tear damage of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis affects the lining of your joints, causing a painful swelling that can eventually result in bone erosion and joint deformity and can affect any and most joints of the body.
In Ayurveda Rheumatoid arthritis has been described as Amavata ( Ama – toxin, vata- joint pain) where due to specific factors, ama (toxins) spread in tissues and enter the joints to cause restricted movements ( Vata factor) and cause swelling and pain in the joints. The same Ama (toxic substances ) enters the dhamani( chanels like vein, blood) by circulation and with the help of vata, what means both Ama and Vata aggravate simultaneously and enters different sites of the body.
Ayurvedic treatments are advised for Amavata includes classical Ayurveda treatments as Swedana ( steaming ) with first priority is clearing the body from toxins Virechana (purgation) or Basti (enema therapy ) , which aim is purification of the body . Ayurveda treatment methods depending upon the stages (acute / chronic) and which Doshas involved, with aim to increase digestive fire ( Agni) , for accumulated Ama (Ama toxins are the endotoxins generated in the body due to accumulation of undigested foods )
In Rheumatoid arthritis treatment also include Ayurvedic medicine used in management of Amavata like Shuntyadi Kwatha , Panchakol kwatha, Simhanada guggulu, Amavatari rasa also exteranal applications using different Ayurvedic paste as Shatapushpadi lepa or other have good treatment results .
