Eczema from the point of view of Ayurveda

Eczema, also known as dermatitis, is a common skin disease that is an overreaction of the immune system followed by skin reaction — dry, cracked, and flaky skin, redness and itching, papules and vesicles. It is more likely to be noticed inside the elbows, wrists, armpits, back of the knees, or on exposed skin surfaces (face, arms, and legs).

There are different types and stages of eczema, the most common is atopic dermatitis.

Eczema can occur at any age and is not caused by any known virus, fungi or bacteria. This means that eczema is not contagious. Eczema can also occur in people who are sensitive to environmental allergens such as pollen.

Ayurveda believes that the cause of eczema is a toxin overload in the body. If the kidneys do not cleanse the blood properly, toxins accumulate in random parts of the body — this lead to eczema.

How Ayurvedic doctors treat eczema

Ayurvedic treatment for eczema focuses on detoxifying the body and balancing the doshas, the three vital energies of the body.

In Ayurveda, eczema is mainly treated with Panchakarma therapies. Other Ayurvedic treatments for eczema include a diet plan and a stress management plan. Typically, it’s recommended to eat a plant-based diet and practice yoga postures to activate certain body centers.

Eczema is thought to occur when doshas are out of balance. The symptoms of eczema are almost always produced by Pitta dosha imbalance. Pitta is the dosha that causes eczema to appear as red, dry, cracked, itchy, or painful skin.
