Parathyroid Diseases

Basic description of the disease

Parathyroid disease affects the four small parathyroid glands in the neck that help maintain the correct level of calcium within the body.

Parathyroid disease affects the parathyroids, four pea-sized glands located in the neck near the thyroid. The glands produce parathyroid hormone , that helps maintain the correct balance of calcium in the body. Normally, the glands release enough hormon to keep calcium levels normal. Disease upsets this delicate balance. There are three types of parathyroid disease: hyperparathyroidism, parathyroid cancer and hypoparathyroidism.

  • Hyperparathyroidism is the most common type of parathyroid disease. As a result, the glands make too much hormon. This may result in too much calcium in the blood—a condition called hypercalcemia. Hypercalcemia can cause serious problems, including - osteoporosis, kidney stones, heart disease, high blood pressure

  • Hypoparathyroidism means the body does not make enough hormon. As a result, the level of calcium in the blood is too low. The condition is usually caused by neck surgery or damage to the parathyroids. It can also happen from autoimmune attacks on the glands.Hypoparathyroidism increases the risk of Addison's disease,  adrenal glands , Cataracts, Parkinson's disease, Pernicious anemia.

  • Parathyroid cancer can cause Hormonal Parathyroid diseases  - it very rare disease

Ayurvedic treatment depends on the diagnosis of the disease. Either the system is "overloaded" or insufficiently maintained. Diseases are associated with Kapha - Pitta or Vatta – Pitta dosha imbalance.  Results in ‘ama formation toxins. If these toxins are not removed from the body, they can accumulate and impair metabolism process at different levels, causing various diseases.

Hyperthyroidism Ayurveda treats as Vata - Pitta caused diseases -   according to it vitiated Vata and Pitta dosha stimulates the jatharagni (gastric fire). Treatment includes lifestyle and diet modification along with detox (Panchakarma) therapies, Shirodhara, Nasya , Lepam and Pitta Vata Shamak herbo-mineral medications. Yoga, Pranayama and exercises have a very positive impact in its treatment.

Ayurvedic treatment focuses on regulation of imbalance low agni (digestive fire), firstly treatment begins with digestion of undigested food(Pachan), then removal of toxins(Shodhan) and then maintenance of equilibrium of dosha and dhatu (Rasayan) treatments.
