Glaucoma

Glaucoma from the point of view of Ayurveda

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that cause optic nerve damage. The optic nerve transmits visual information from the eye to the brain.

The main risk factors associated with the onset of the disease are age and genetic predisposition.

There are two types of glaucoma:
  1. Open-angle glaucoma. The drainage angle formed by the iris and cornea remains open. However, other parts of the drainage system do not drain properly. This may result in a slow and gradual increase in eye pressure.
  2. Angle-closure glaucoma. This type of glaucoma occurs when the iris bulges. The bulging iris partially or completely blocks the drainage angle. As a result, fluid cannot circulate through the eye and pressure rises. Angle-closure glaucoma can develop suddenly or gradually.

Glaucoma, according to Ayurveda, is caused by the vitiation of all three doshas — Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Ayurvedic treatment methods can cure glaucoma completely.

Ayurvedic procedures help remove obstacles in the flow of fluid in the eye, so that the intraocular pressure can be maintained in the normal range.

How Ayurvedic doctors treat glaucoma

Ayurveda has a variety of herbal based remedies and therapies that not only reduce the eye pressure, but also restore normal eye functions.

Virechana, Nethradhara, Nasya, Takra dhara, Anjana, and Aschotanam are the main Ayurvedic treatments that strengthen the optic nerve.

It is advisable to evaluate the harmful effects of glaucoma, and start treatment as soon as possible. Healing remedies are prescribed by an Ayurvedic doctor and are used exactly as prescribed.
