Pregnancy is not a disease! It is allowed for a pregnant woman to be happy, active, and fulfilled. There is a lack of joy somewhere — either out of fear or resentment.

Anemia during pregnancy from the point of view of Ayurveda

Anemia during pregnancy is very common. Iron levels drop during pregnancy because blood volume increases. When a woman has anemia, it means blood doesn't have enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen to tissues and to your baby.

There are different types of anemia, that can develop during pregnancy. These include:
  • Iron-deficiency anemia
  • Folate-deficiency anemia
  • Vitamin B12 deficiency

During pregnancy, the body produces more blood to support the growth of the baby. If the body is not getting enough iron or certain other nutrients, it might not be able to produce the necessary amount of red blood cells. Lower levels of iron are expected in pregnancy, but if women feel tired, lethargic, fatigued, dizzy, heart races — it is advisable to speak to a midwife about iron supplementation. Anemia during pregnancy can easily be treated by adding iron or vitamin supplements to the daily routine.

In Ayurveda, anemia in pregnancy is called “Garbhini-Pandu”. The fertile period of a female is believed to be Pitta predominant.

How Ayurvedic doctors treat anemia during pregnancy

Ayurvedic management is a safe and effective way of curing anemia during pregnancy. Foremost, Ayurvedic doctors recommend a diet rich in iron. Iron-rich foods are red meat and poultry, leafy green vegetables (such as broccoli, kale, and spinach), eggs, raisins, dates, pomegranates, apples, sesame seeds, figs, and beets.

Ayurveda also offers several formulations for the management of anemia, such as Amalaki, Yasthimadhu and Guduchi, taken along with vitamin C to help in better absorption of iron. Vitamin C-rich foods include citrus fruits and juices like oranges, lemons, strawberries, tomatoes, and peppers.
