Menopause from the point of view of Ayurveda


Menopause is the time that marks the end of the menstrual cycles. It is a natural biological process, the end of a woman's reproductive years. Menopause is the point when a woman no longer has menstrual periods for at least 12 months. This usually happens between the ages of 45 and 55. There are physical symptoms, such as hot flashes, and emotional symptoms of menopause, that may disrupt sleep, lower the energy or affect emotional health. Signs and symptoms, including changes in menstruation, can vary among women.

Perimenopause is the first stage in this process and can start eight to 10 years before menopause. Postmenopause is the stage after menopause.

In perimenopause, woman might experience these signs and symptoms:
  • Irregular periods
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Hot flashes
  • Chills
  • Night sweats
  • Sleep problems
  • Mood changes
  • Weight gain and slowed metabolism
  • Thinning hair and dry skin
