Lower back pain

The low back is the area of the back that starts below the ribcage.
Lower back pain is the most common chronic pain disorders. 
The lumbar spine or lower back is a very well-connected bone structure of interconnecting bones, joints, nerves, ligaments, and muscles all working together to provide support, strength, and flexibility. 
The pain may make it hard to move or stand up straight. Pain that comes on suddenly is “acute.” Acute episodes of lower back pain usually last from a few days to 4 weeks, it might happen during sports or heavy lifting. Pain that lasts more than 3 months is considered “chronic.”
Most common causes of Lower back pain - sprains and strains,  damaged disc causing pain,  herniated discsciaticaspondylolisthesis, spinal stenosis, abnormal spinal curvature – like scoliosis, also  arthritis,  spinal tumors,  accident, injury, other trauma
In Ayurveda lower back pain is called as kateegraham/ prishtasoola. According to Ayurveda, low back pain is caused by the imbalance of doshas – in lower back pain Vata Dosha is involved.

The causes of lower back pain are mechanical or organic . Sometimes spinal conditions are congenital at birth - meaning the disorder develops later in life. Mechanical lower back pain is often triggered by spinal movement and involves spinal structures, such as the facet joints, intervertebral discs, vertebrae, ligaments, muscles or soft tissues. Organic lower back pain is attributed to disease, such as spinal cancer. Sometimes back pain is caused by an unknown cause.

  • Ayurvedic treatment plan starts with removing the toxins ( Ama) from channels of the body, improving the digestive power ( Agni)  and balancing the aggravated dosha. 

Ayurvedic  treatment plan usually prescribes both internal and external medications.

  • Internal – Herbs that cleanse, nourish and balance the vitiated dosha. Common Ayurvedic herbs and formulations include Yogaraja Guggulu, Nirgundi, Gokshura, Maharasnadi Kwath, each case is individualized and the required use is based on the overall state of health.

  • There are many effective external Ayurvedic therapies used in lower back pain are . Most popular and efffective are – Abhyangam ( Whole body massage with warm oil),  Basti ( medicated enema – to remove toxins and reduce Ama) ,  Dhanyamla dara / Sneha Dhara ( pouring warm liquids continuously on affected area, it reduces swelling and  is effective pain relief of  muscle spasm ) , also Ayurveda pratice Pizhichil therapy (  squeezing warm oil while being massaged gently) and  Kativasti – a tank prepared with medical paste is placed on lower back and a warm medicated oil is poured , this procedure is very advisable disk problems -  nourishes the disc.

  • Yoga and yogasanas also helps to relieve from pain.
