Basic description of the disease


Foot drop is a general term for difficulty lifting the front part of the foot. If you have foot drop, the front of your foot might drag on the ground when you walk. Foot drop is a sign of an underlying neurological, muscular or anatomical problem. Sometimes foot drop is temporary, but it can be permanent.
Causes of foot drop might include:
-   Nerve injury – is the most common cause of foot drop is compression of a nerve in your leg that controls the muscles - nerve can be injured during hip or knee replacement surgery, nerve root injury —in the spine can also cause problem.
Muscle or nerve disorders - various forms of muscular dystrophy can causes progressive muscle weakness,
- Brain and spinal cord disorders -  that affect the spinal cord or brain — such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis , multiple sclerosis stroke may cause foot drop.
The peroneal nerve controls the muscles that lift your foot. This nerve runs near the surface of your skin on the side of your knee. Activities that compress this nerve can increase your risk of foot drop:
- Crossing your legs
- Prolonged kneeling
- Wearing a leg cast

Since the cause is to be found in neurological problems due to nerve dysfunction, the problem is related to Vata Doshu disbalance. Primarily in Ayurveda treatment , the dominance of Vata dosha is prevented - including lifestyle changes and diet plans. In this case, Ayurvedic therapies such as Basti (medicated enema) are suitable, which frees the body from the excessive presence of Vata .  Other Panchakarma therapy Pizchil + Abyanga massage   - the medicated oil ispoured on body to activate nervous system. Otehr Ayurvedic  treatments as Swedana, and Pinda swedana therapies has a good results in Foot drop treatment. Pichu is and application of cotton dipped in Luke warm medicated oil (Thailam) on local body parts, in this case in foot or spinal ( depends of where the root of problem begins). Each case in individual – treatment period and medicine used for this procedure will be decided as per the condition. Yoga and physiotherapy also recommended.   • Self foot massage with Cajeput, Roosemary or Lavander oil is effective 

  • Take  a ½ tsp of Ghee every morning ½ h before breakfast

  • Eat a warm and fresh cooked food

  • Avoid cold food 

  • Avoid fast food – it’s aggressive Vata dosha
