Multiple Sclerosis

Basic description of the disease

  • Multiple sclerosis is a demyelinating disease in which the insulating covers of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord are damaged. This damage disrupts the ability of parts of the nervous system to communicate, resulting in a range of signs and symptoms, including physical, mental, and sometimes psychiatric problems. Multiple Sclerosis is a disease that affects brain and spinal cord, and can cause problems with vision, balance, muscle control.

  • Several factors that include heredity, infection, smoking, alcohol consumption, environmental factors, and mental stress leads to the development of multiple sclerosis. The factors may lead to the alteration of the nerve functionality leading to the disease condition.

  • There are typically 4 types of Multiple Sclerosis:

  • - Relapsing Multiple Sclerosis – people get episodes of diseases with intervals in between when there is almost no symptom

  • - Secondary-Progressive Multiple Sclerosis - symptoms worsen steadily over time

  • - Primary-Progressive Multiple Sclerosis - characterized by slowly worsening symptoms from the beginning, with no intervals

  • - Progressive-Relapsing Multiple Sclerosis - worsens from the beginning, with acute exacerbations.

The strength of Ayurveda in treating neurological disorders is globally appreciated. Since it addresses the root cause of the issue the results are fantastic.

In Ayurveda, Multiple sclerosis can be correlated with Avrutha vata.

From view of Ayurveda Multiple Sclerosis is predominantly a Vata disease. Vata is considered as a chief factor for the physiological maintenance of the body. Vata  is responsible for functions of the central, autonomic, and peripheral nervous systems. Vata controls all types of movements. It is also responsible for the cognitive and neocognitive function of the brain and secretion of various chemical neurotransmitters and hormones. This description of Vata resembles the functions of central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous systems.

Ayurveda offers a very effective treatment methodology for Multiple Sclerosis, based on the classical treatment methods of Ayurveda. The treatment would be decided on the physical conditions, health history, and similar aspects concerning the patient. The Ayurveda doctor will plan the treatment after a thorough examination of the patient only.
Multiple Sclerosis  treatment primarily consists of 3 parts :
-      Body detoxication , cleansing through Panchakarma therapies
-      Ayurvedic herbal internal medications
-       Rejuvenation Ayurvedic procedures – different massages, yoga techniques, meditations.
Along with these, strict diet & life style modification will be advocated.
