Basic description of the disease


Sciatica nerve inflammation/ irritation radiates pain along the sciatic nerve pathway, which starts from the lower back through the hips and buttocks, as well as through each leg. Usually, sciatica affects only one side of the body. 

The Sciatic nerve is one of the most important and  body’s longest . That is also the  reason, why  the sciatic nerve causes so much pain . This nerve is responsible on your ability to control and feel your legs. When this nerve is irritated, you’ll experience sciatica. 

The nerve starts at the back of the pelvis and runs downward through the hip area and buttocks into each leg. Near the knee, the sciatic nerve divides into two nerves. 

Sciatica health problems most commonly occurs when a herniated disk, bone spur on the spine or narrowing of the spine (spinal stenosis) compresses part of the nerve, causes inflammation, pain. 

Risk factors for sciatica include – Age, obesity, occupation (that requires twist back, carry heavy loads or drive a motor vehicle for long periods ) , prolonged sitting,  pregnancy , trauma . More rarely, the nerve can be compressed by a Spinal tumor or cause of Diabetes (blood sugar, increases your risk of nerve damage).


Ayurveda categorized Sciatica as one of diseases caused by vitiation Vata (responsible for the movement and function) . Sometimes even Kapha (dosha responsible for lubrication and bodily fluids)  can be responsible for Sciatica health problem.

Treatment in Ayurveda is aimed at restoring and correction the balance in the body  - Ayurvedic treatments for Sciatica concentrate on bringing back imbalanced aggravated Vata or Vata – Kapha Doshas.

According to centuries of experience Ayurveda offers excellent treatment methods for treating Sciatica, including Panchakarma therapies along with internal medicines . 

The Ayurvedic treatment consists of three parts: 

  • (Sodhanam) cleaning body of the accumulated toxic products of digestion, metabolism and the disease process – using Ayurvedic therapies such Vasti ,  Basti or Virechanam are the most important procedure in Ayurveda for curing Sciatica 

  •  (Samanam) pacification and correction of the entities responsible change of activity and functioning   

  • (Rasayanam) rejuvenation of the body tissue to regain and maintain natural strength and vitality.

Ayurvedic  therapies are directed towards relieving the inflammatory, and treats causes of Sciatica, releasing the spasms and nerve compressions in the affected area, strengthening and nourishing entire spine & supporting tissues. 

Most offten Ayurvedic therapies used for curing Sciatica  - Dhanyamla dhara, Pizhichil and Abyanga swedam ( special Ayurvedic massage therapies using warm oil ),also  Elakizhi or Navarakizhi – ( massage technique using herbal leaves in pinda ) Kadeevasthy ( therapy where  oil is kept over the affected part  usually the lower back inside a boundary made of some herbal pastes ) , also Swedana (body heating) therapies is very advisable during Sciatica pain treatment.  

Along with these therapies, Ayurveda doctor may also described some of Ayurveda herbal internal medication, which may consist of herbls like Guggulu, Nirgundi, Ashwagandha, Pippali . Specific recommendations are available during consultation with an Ayurvedic doctor.
