Basic description of the disease
Bipolar disorder, is a mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings that include emotional highs - hypomania, and lows flows - depression.
There are several types of bipolar disorders. All of types are characterized by extreme mood swings that alternate between mania, hypomania (elevated, euphoric, hyperactive or irritable mood) and depression or can exist in a variety of combinations simultaneously. Symptoms can cause unpredictable changes in mood and behavior.
Bipolar I disorder involves episodes of the most severe high and low mood swings
Bipolar II disorder is a milder form, involving episodes of hypomania that alternate with depression
Cyclothymic disorder describes even milder mood changes
Other related type include bipolar and related disorders induced by certain drugs or alcohol or due to a medical condition, such as Cushing's disease, multiple sclerosis or stroke.
According to Ayurveda regardless of the dosha imbalance, all patients suffering from bipolar disorder and have low ojas. Ayurvedic practitioners liken bipolar disorder to being a lack of stability or ojas - is responsible for immunity, strength, integrity, and vitality in the body.
Also Ayurveda consist - high Vata in the mind manifests as fear, alienation, anxiety and possible nervous breakdown. In dealing with the doshas, Vata must be balanced first even if there are other current imbalances. Panchakarma is a purification and detoxification treatment that helps maintain good state of health. Ayurvedic treatment can include Vamana (vomit therapy) , Snehana (Oleation) with medicated oils using Abhyanga (Ayurvedic massage). Shirodhara - oil on the forehead and shirobasti - oil in a crown on the head are also highly recommended as they have direct positive action on the brain and mind.
