Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson's Disease from the point of view of Ayurveda

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder. Smooth and coordinated bodily muscle movements are made possible by dopamine- a substance in the brain. In Parkinson’s, the cells of the substantia nigra start to die. When this happens, dopamine levels are reduced. When they have dropped 60 to 80 percent, symptoms of Parkinson’s start to appear. Parkinson’s disease symptoms include muscle rigidity, tremors, and changes in speech and gait. According to researches men are one and a half times more likely to develop Parkinson’s than women. Parkinson’s usually appears between ages 50 and 60 years. This is one of the most common extra-pyramidal crippling disease affecting the older adults.

HOW AYURVEDIC DOCTORS TREAT PARKINSON'S DISEASE

According to Ayurveda Parkinson’s disease is known as Kampa Vata-  where Kampa-  means Shaking and  Vata – is known and air energy.

Ayurveda explained on the basis  of Kampa Vata – the aggravation of Vata is due to many factors such as excessive physical activity, lack of proper nutrition, severe constipation , aggravated Vata disturbs the Rasa Dhatu (Tissue) which cause the early symptoms of dryness in the skin , later relocated to other Dhatus, affecting muscular and Brain tissue causing the muscle stiffness, rigidity, alerted behaviour and tremors.

Vasti (Anal enema) is the best purification method in order to balance the disturbed Vata. Ayurveda offers wide range of herbal supplements to help the patients of Parkinson’s – prescribed at the discretion of Ayurvedic physicians.
