Periodontal disease

Periodontal disease from the point of view of Ayurveda

Periodontitis is a serious gum infection that damages the soft tissue, and if left untreated can destroy the bone that supports the teeth. Periodontitis can lead to loosening or even loss of teeth.
Periodontal disease is mainly the result of infection and inflammation of the gums and bones that surround and support the teeth. In the early stage, called gingivitis, the gums can swell and become red and sometimes bleed.
In a more serious form, called periodontitis, bacteria in the mouth infect the tissue around the tooth, causing inflammation around the tooth, periodontal disease. When the bacteria stay on teeth long enough, they form a film called plaque, which eventually hardens to and turns into tartar. Tartar buildup can extend below the gum line, making it difficult to brush your teeth. Only a professional dental hygienist can remove the tartar and stop periodontal disease.
In Ayurvedic texts, the periodontium is described as Dantamula. According to Ayurveda, Pitta dosha is the main cause of gum problems. If excess mucus or high acidity occurs in the mouth, it can lead to a bacterial infection, which is a Kapha disorder.

How Ayurvedic doctors treat periodontal disease
