Sleep Apnoea

Sleep Apnoea from the point of view of Ayurveda

Sleep apnea  is a serious sleep disorder that occurs when a person's breathing is interrupted during sleep .
People who suffer from sleep apnea stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep, that means the brain -- and the rest of the body -- may not get enough oxygen.

There are two types of sleep apnea:
- Obstructive sleep apnea - the more common type -  it is caused by a blockage of the airway, usually when the soft tissue in the back of the throat collapses during sleep.

- Central sleep apnea - the airway is not blocked, but the brain fails to signal the muscles to breathe, due to instability in the respiratory control center.

Sometimes there is combination of two types which occurs when someone has both obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea , it calls - Complex sleep apnea syndrome..

The most common signs and symptoms of obstructive and central sleep apneas include - loud snoring, episodes in which you stop breathing during sleep — which would be reported by another personGasping for air dur, gng sleep, awakening with a dry mouth, morning headache, difficulty staying asleep (insomnia), difficulty paying attention while awake, irritability

According to Ayurveda, Sleep apnea could be caused by impaired agni or digestive fire, aggravated Kapha and Vata.

Ayurvedic treatment therapies , with effective results are :

– Shirodhara – Shir or ‘head’ and Dhara or ‘stream’. In this deeply soothing process, the scalp and forehead receive a steady and gentle stream of lukewarm medicated herbal oil poured in an stimulating points covering the whole of the forehead. Shirodhara rejuvenates and enlivens the central nervous system , which is affected in case of central sleep apnea.

– Nasya – nasal oil massages are a great option to help balance the Vata dosha and reduce Kapha aggravation. The nose is the door to consciousness. Nasal Therapy helps to clear and lubricate the sinus passageways, relieving acute and chronic sinus problems.

-Abhyanga is one of the most popular and commonly recommended therapies in Ayurveda that incorporates warm, aromatic oils, rhythmically massaged into your body, which loosen toxins, relax the nervous system, and provide rest, nourishment, and rejuvenation. It improves blood circulation, tones and moisturizes skin, works up the lymph system, and calms the mind and nervous system.

– Karna Purna is a treatment designed to calm nervous system and create a deep stillness. Warm oil is gently, slowly poured into the ears, lubricating the ear canal, calming the mind, and soothing the nervous system. When the ears are bathed in oil, the mind and body automatically calms, creating a state of deep relaxation. It also importantly, balances vata dosha.

Herbs like ashwagandha, jatamansi, shankhpushpi and sarpagandha can help improve cognitive functions.
