Fatty liver disease

Fatty liver disease from the point of view of Ayurveda

The liver is a large and complex organ located in the upper right abdomen of the human body. Liver (Yakrut) performs more than 500 vital functions and keeps the body healthy. It helps process nutrients from food and drinks and filters harmful substances from blood. Important functions of the liver include metabolizing carbohydrates, storing vitamins A, D, E, K and B 12, converting fats to energy and synthesizing and regulating cholesterol. The liver stores excess carbohydrate-derived glucose for release as needed to provide a steady supply of energy to the body. Fatty liver disease is also known as hepatic steatosis. It happens when fat builds up in the liver. Having small amounts of fat in your liver is normal, but too much can become a health problem. The accumulation of large amounts of fat in the liver can cause inflammation of the liver, which can lead to liver damage and scarring. Fatty liver is the main cause of liver diseases like cirrhosis and hepatitis. There are two types of fatty liver disease: alcoholic and non-alcoholic. Alcoholic fatty liver disease is caused by heavy alcohol use. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) isn’t related to alcohol use. It is more common in people who are obese, have type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure.

How Ayurvedic doctors treat Fatty liver disease

The liver is an organ of Pitta dosha. In the treatment of fatty liver disease, Ayurveda focuses on balancing the Pitta dosha and clearing the clogged subtle channels that carry fatty tissue (medas). Ayurveda provides different treatment methods, such as Virechana (medicated purgation) to help alleviate Pitta vitiation and clear blockages in the subtle channels.

The treatment uses Ayurvedic supplements, herbs and formulations that have a positive effect on liver function. Forestica syrup is an Ayurvedic tonic that tones the liver, prevents damage to its cells and restores normal liver functions. Livomyn Tablet is another Ayurvedic preparation – it regulates the levels of liver enzymes and improves its function. The most common herbs are Bhringaraja (Eclipta alba), Sarapunkha (Tephrosia purpurea), Thippali (Piper longum), Bhumyamalaki (Phyllanthus niruri), Katurohini (Picroriza kurrora) – these and some other herbs are especially useful in the treatment of liver diseases.

Fatty liver is a condition that takes time to heal. First of all, before and after treatment, a healthy lifestyle should be followed.
