Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids from the point of view of Ayurveda

Hemorrhoids or piles are dilated or swollen veins (low-pressure blood vessels that return blood to the heart) under the rectum around the anus. Hemorrhoids are classified as internal and external piles, according to their level in relation to the anus. They often go away on their own, with a proper diet and a healthy lifestyle. Hemorrhoids are rarely serious, except for the cases when symptoms don’t go away within a week or if the patient has bleeding. Hemorrhoids are the result of doshas imbalance. If hemorrhoids are caused by the imbalance of Vata dosha, it is rough and hard, painful and often accompanied by constipation. Hemorrhoids caused by Pitta dosha imbalance are red, inflamed and bleeding, its symptoms may also include fever and diarrhea. In the treatment of hemorrhoids, the main goal of Ayurveda is restoration of the balance of vital energies.

How Ayurvedic doctors treat hemorrhoids

In case of hemorrhoids, the balance of the digestive system should be restored in the first place. Good and proper digestion depends on the digestive fire (Agni). According to Indian traditional beliefs, Agni’s strength varies with the sun position in the sky, so when the sun is at its zenith at noon, the Agni is at its strongest. This is why we should eat the heaviest or largest meal in the middle of the day, not at night.

Ayurvedic treatment of hemorrhoids often includes use of Ayurvedic Kshar – a mixture of different herbs that is applied to the pile with a proctoscope. In more serious cases, Kshara-sutra Ayurvedic therapy can be given – hemorrhoids are tied at their base by specially processed threads.

And here are most common herbal remedies made from medicinal plants, used for prevention and Ayurvedic treatment of hemorrhoids:
