Acid reflux (GERD)

Acid reflux (GERD) from the point of view of Ayurveda

Acid reflux or GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) is a digestive health problem that occurs when the valve between the esophagus and stomach is weakened. Normally, during digestion, the valve opens to allow food through, and then closes tightly. In GERD, the valve remains open, allowing stomach acid to flow back into the esophagus. This can cause a variety of problems, of which the most common are heartburn, regurgitation, watery rash, nausea, chest pain, belching, headache, vomiting, earache, and pain when swallowing food.

How our doctors treat GERD

If you are suffering from acid reflux, consultation with an Ayurvedic doctor might help. The doctor will prescribe you personal treatment, which includes taking Ayurvedic medicine to balance your Pitta dosha.

Ayurvedic treatment from our doctor also includes a personal diet plan: you will have to review and change your diet. Panchakarma therapies, such as Virechana and Vamana, are recommended according to the Ayurvedic doctors. Regular practice of yoga and meditation is highly recommended too.

More tips for effective Ayurvedic treatment of acid reflux:

Fast food, hot and spicy food, too oily or too sour food should be avoided. Incompatible meal ingredients injure all doshas, and it causes increased acidity in your body and digestive system. Ayurvedic doctors advise you to change your diet: avoid tea, coffee, carbonated and alcoholic drinks. Also it’s better to avoid garlic, ginger, onions, tomatoes, vinegar in your recipes.

Another important factor in curing acid reflux from an Ayurvedic point of view is paying attention to your sleeping position. Make sure that your head is higher than your feet, you may need to use an extra pillow.

For the best treatment results please avoid any kind of stress – this is important, because any stress is one of the main causes of hyperacidity.
